AFTER SCHOOL SCHEDULE

Academic Enrichment Program

Beyond the Walls program will be an extension of the regular school program. The student’s IEP is the backbone of instruction and measurement of success. Beyond the Walls staff and NHP faculty will meet daily during which time they will obtain information on homework assigned, intensive instruction needed, and any other information they may need to follow up on after school.

Homework is assigned four (4) days a week as follows:

Mondays/Wednesdays:
Mathematics*
Science

Tuesdays/Thursdays:
Mathematics*
English
Social Studies

*Because mathematics is problematic for most students, math homework will be assigned each day.

The After School program will begin with each student reporting to their assigned homeroom. They will be served a healthy snack. The teacher will review their homework assignments and assist students who need help completing their tasks. Students who need intensive instruction will be identified and pulled out from their homeroom and tutored individually or in small groups.

Credit retrieval is a program that maybe available to students who are behind in credits. Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Education. Physical Education (PE) is also an after school class that can be taken for credit. Many students wish to take a foreign language or another elective, but the PE requirement is in the way. Taking PE after school will allow the student to take these additional classes. If a student is eligible and wants to obtain additional credit in the after school program, daily attendance is mandatory.

After the academic enrichment session, there are two (2) additional workshops in the day. One of these workshops will be addressing physical fitness; however additional workshops offered will enrich academics through a hands-on approach. These workshops were developed with student, parent, and faculty impute. Workshops include computers, robotics, drama, art and music.

Physical Activity Program
The majority of NHP students are enrolled in a P.E. class during the regular school day in which they engage in 30 to 45 minutes of physical activity.

The Beyond the Walls participants will have an opportunity to participate in two (2) 45 minute physical activity workshops. These workshops were developed with student, parent and faculty impute. Activities range from team sports practice, weight training, dance, and swimming.

Field Trips
Off campus field trips will be scheduled periodically to support the enrichment program. In addition, students will participate in special events such as the California Coastal Clean-up, AIDS Walk LA, and Wild Life on Wheels. Extended excursions such as camping trips and the ropes course at the Ojai Foundation will also be scheduled throughout the year. Parent/guardian permission slips and releases must be obtained prior to any field trip.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

Homework Tutorial
Homework Tutorial will provide supplemental academic support to all students in all subjects.

Reading Enrichment
Students will learn to master the English reading system through speech sounds, syllables, and meaningful parts known as morphemes. In addition, students will utilize the most crucial principles of the English language: most spelling follows regular & predictable patterns, every speech sound in a word is represented by grapheme, many phonemes have more than one spelling, and many spellings are determined by the position of the sound. Students will also have the opportunity to exercise writing skills.

Mathematics Enrichment
Mathematics Enrichment encourages students to excel at their own level in mathematics while addressing unique learning styles. Math Enrichment will assist students in being successful as they enroll in higher math levels.

CAHSEE Prep
CAHSEE Prep provides assistance to students to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The program provides intensive instruction and services for eligible students that are required to pass the CAHSEE. Students in grades 11 and 12 who have taken and not passed one or both parts of the exam are eligible to participate in the program. The CAHSEE Intensive Instruction Program is an intervention program designed to provide standards-based instruction in math and English language arts that helps prepare the students to pass the exam.

SAT Tutorial
SAT Tutorial consists of a holistic approach to preparing students for standardized tests. Specific techniques for each subsection of the student’s particular test will be utilized. Students practice with real test questions from the College Board.

Council
Participating in Council teaches us how to let go of personal expectations and become fully attentive to others. The practice fosters compassionate responses and provides a continuing source of wisdom. Compassion arises naturally when we listen with respect and express ourselves honestly with an open heart, whether it is in words, song, movement, or silence. The expression of the “truth of council” can come through any individual in the circle, or through profound silence. Listening to the voice of council teaches the participant that the circle’s knowledge is greater than the totality of its members’ individual knowing. Participants in council will also go on hikes in local areas.

Creative Writing
Creative writing introduces the student to the three central genre of literature: short story, poetry, and drama.

Drama This course offers workshops on acting techniques and history of the theater. Students work with professional performers throughout the year and develop beginning skills in acting.

Robotics
Robotics will focus on models and methods for the design and development of robotic devices whose function is to accomplish prescribed tasks with minimal human intervention. The focus will be on basic robotics elements: simple mechanics (moving, turning, lifting), sensing the environment (light, contact, proximity), monitoring internal state (time, position, orientation), and incremental design for solving a problem.

Sports
The Sports Program provides a comprehensive and sequential progression of learning experiences which contribute to the total growth and development of students. Students review and refine motor skills and sport strategies while developing a positive approach to fitness. Also, they are able to select activities within the program according to their interests.

Fitness/Weight Lifting Fitness/ Weight Lifting is designed for all students. Students work on individualized programs that improve their muscular strength and overall physical fitness, as well as some cardiovascular development.

Swimming
This is a “Swim for Fitness” program designed for swimmers and non-swimmers who want to swim for fun, swim for fitness or just want to learn to be safe around the water.

Art
Art begins with simple, easy guidelines that will enable students to draw, paint, sculpt, etc. Creative expression includes the skills, processes, materials and tools used to create original works of art.

Music
The music program offers a wide variety of individual and group listening, creating, and performing opportunities. The curriculum includes creating, performing, and participating in music through a varied repertoire of music. Ultimately, students will apply what they learn in music across subject areas and develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC COURSES

Social Skills Group
The Beyond The Walls Social Skills Development Group meets weekly to provide a safe after school environment where students can learn, develop, and practice interpersonal interaction. This includes listening, verbalizing, assertiveness, and friendship-building skills. Students will not only learn skills didactically but also have the opportunity to practice them within the group and develop more complex relationships with peers. Ultimately, skills developed inside the group can be generalized to the student’s life during the regular school day, at home, and in the community.

Community Service
Students participate and volunteer in local area events that give back to their community. Events such as California Coastal Clean-Up, AIDS Walk LA, Wild Life on Wheels, and MEND (feeding homeless families) are just a few campus wide activities available. NHP has a community service requirement for graduation. This would satisfy those required hours.

Workability
Dubnoff Center has partnered with NHP in providing job readiness programs on campus. This workshop prepares students for the job application process, to get an understanding of employment paperwork, and developing the interviewing skills necessary for today’s job market.

After successfully completing the eight (8) week course, the student is ready to intern for a local employer. This placement is supervised by the job coach who continues to help the student problem solve issues that may arise on the job. The employer has the option to hire the student upon completion of the internship. Students who may need additional or continued support in vocational development will be referred to the State Department of Rehabilitation. This program works with young adults and supports their efforts in job development as an adult.
