Teacher: Erin Shapiro
Class: Biology
Date: September 13, 2010 - September 17, 2010

Goals and Objectives

Complete assessment on science root words
Begin material from the book - What is a living thing? What is an ecosystem? What are the different biomes?
Complete a lab to explore the concepts of growth and development, as well as repose to stimuli
Get ready to perform oral assignment in front of the class

CA Standards for Biology:
Pre-requisite material (Living vs. Non-living)
6. Stability in an ecosystem is a balance between competing effects. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know biodiversity is the sum total of different kinds of organisms and is affected by alterations of habitats.
b. Students know how to analyze changes in an ecosystem resulting from changes in climate, human activity, introduction of nonnative species, or changes in population size.
c. Students know how fluctuations in population size in an ecosystem are determined by the relative rates of birth, immigration, emigration, and death.
d. Students know how water, carbon, and nitrogen cycle between abiotic resources and organic matter in the ecosystem and how oxygen cycles through photosynthesis and respiration.
e. Students know a vital part of an ecosystem is the stability of its producers and decomposers.

Tuesday Activity: How do you know something is "living"? List 5 non-living things, and 5 living things.

Notes: 1-3 Studying Life

CW: Section questions p 22
Wednesday Activity: Living or nonliving?

Mealworm lab
- growth and development
- response to stimuli
Thursday Mealworm observations

Notes: 4-2 Ecosystems

CW: Section Review Questions p. 97 1-6
Friday 1/2 Day!

Notes: 4-3 Biomes

Activity: Teaching the Biomes
In pairs, students will complete a poster an oral report on the biome assigned. Each student must speak to the class, explaining the biome. Students must be prepared to answer questions from me and/or their peers regarding their assigned biome.
